Oh yeah ... now look who's talkin', er, writin'

A very encouraging and all around upbeat post on the Digital Divide Network about older folk's bloggin'.

I LIKE it!

A sampling of elder-blogs:

Urban Vancouver

John Jay Hooker Center ...

Dad's Tomato Garden Journal

Thoroughly Modern Millie [whew! I was wonderin' where the women were ....]

And here's a longer list compiled by Joe Jennet testifying to the fact that blogging is not about age ... it's about beauty ... wait! no, that's not right. I love middle age ... I really do.

Interesting comment: I was wondering where the women were.

I've often wondered the same thing -- and I'm female!

My guess is that the women are where they've always been when it comes to technology and computers: kind of on the edge of things. Frankly most of them that I've talked to just don't get what all the fuss is about.

I taught high school English for 18 years (as extra-curricular, I organized the district's first web club, administered the district's web site, mail server etc etc back in 1997) and it was the same for the 14 year old girls as it was for the women that I know now:

they'd much rather have face2face relationships than friendships online. They're joiners of the Real World (TM) and don't find much appeal in the virtual stuff.

Email is fun, so is live chat - but guess what? for them that's just a temporary substitute for what they've got going on in their "real" lives.

Maybe we'll see more older women come aboard as time goes by. It seems the younger they are, the more likely they are to see the possibilities of the web, and age creeps up on all of us.

I plan to be around for approx. 30 more years, so I'll get to see if I'm right. What do you think?

Hi -

I'm an older gal blogging about women, aging and life at www.womenvision.wordpress.com. Yes, there are some of us who are well over 50 and sharing the way it goes online.
